Madame Wu and Elise Graham’s long awaited studio album "Time Waits For No Woman" has arrived! To celebrate they are putting together a night of music and celebration with a solid line up of local talent to complement the unveiling of their new release.
Supports and pre sale ticket links to be updated soon.
The album blends the emotive and the social, the personal and the political, providing insight into the minds of two women navigating their way through modern Sydney life. The Sydney hip hop duo combines the powerful lyricism of emcee Madame Wu with the smooth tones of vocalist Elise Graham to create a unique sound throughout the album.
The pair are no strangers to the stage, well known for their thought... provoking shows in the Sydney hip hop scene and having supported the likes of De La Soul, Thundamentals, Ozi Batla, Pez and All Day. This is their second studio album and moves towards a new style with a more melodic bent whilst remaining true to their hip hop roots.
In a sense it has all the typical hip hop themes, except this album is anything but typical.
Take “National Obsession,” a track explored through the fictional character of a wife visiting her husband and father of her children in prison. The song starts off as a critique of NSW’ exploding prison population, then suddenly switches its focus to the invisible victim, the supportive female partner so often relegated to an extra in the mainstream narrative. Told through her eyes, the narrative switches sharply back and forth between the narrator’s sadness- singer and emcee taking turns to step into the character’s shoes.
Bursting at times with joy for life, at others despair at continuing a journey without loved ones, the album plays to this theme of power dynamics through a range of fictional characters to get closer to the political. The album dreams of an alternate reality, where the dynamics of power have shifted to equality.
The pair’s frustration and want for social change is evident in tracks such as “National Obsession” and “Reclaim The Night”, whilst their softer sides come to play in the reflective track “Simplicity”. Guests include Blue Mountains vocalist “BlackJack Davey” (Cooking with Caustic) and cuts from DJ Migz, DJ Platterpush and DJ Cost. Beats are provided by Beatzophrenic, Calvin Schnierer, Riverkid, Jacob Norman, Waza and DJ Prolifik.
The album’s official Sydney launch will be at Brighton Up Bar on Oxford St on March 24 (Doors 8pm, music until late). Their CDs will be available to preorder via their facebook page and digitally available on Bandcamp from the 11th March.
